The USB flash drive technology has also made it easier to retrieve lost files when there is a system crash, or when files are accidentally deleted from the Recycle Bin. If a data recovery program is downloaded to the hard drive, it could well overwrite the very data that it is designed to save. The flash drive has provided an easy solution. You can now download the software to another computer, and then transfer it to the flash drive. The flash drive can be inserted into the original computer, and the program operated from there.

To use these, all you have to do is plug your USB device into the computer, so it registers in the menus with a drive letter. These data recovery utilities are extremely effective, and they will locate the lost files in the vast majority of cases. The only things which can prevent this from happening are the permanent overwriting of the files by new data, and actual physical damage to the USB drive. In the case of actual damage, you will need to refer the unit to a trained professional, as only they will have the necessary equipment to perform an effective diagnosis and repair.

Data recovery flash drive software will handle any other error, whether it is caused by a temporary glitch in the operating system, or something more serious. If you think the operating system may be at fault, it will be a good idea to save your crucially important files to another external back up system, different from the USB drive and the main hard drive. Even burning to a CD will do this. Once you have completed your USB data recovery by saving the file externally, you will then need to diagnose the fault to ensure it doesn't happen again. If it is not human error, but a fault in the operating system, you will get some diagnostic help from your data recovery flash software.
